So it didn’t work out with the farmer babes. I think they were looking for a more formal arrangement than we could give under our current circumstances (i.e. ohmygod Will opened another restaurant this is so crazy), so I consider this one totally my bad. I wish them the best of luck, and any farm will be lucky to have them. They built us a pretty rad chicken tractor, which I’ll share in a future post.
That being said, the 2012 planting season is still ahead of us, and we’d still hate to see the produce side of the farm lay fallow for the year. So, do you want to be a farmer?
We are looking for someone (or a team of someones) interested in running their own organic produce operation on our 1.25 acres of farmable land. The “rent” would be 1 hour of labor per day caring for our livestock (8 pigs, 5 sheep, 30 chickens, 6 rabbits, 3 ducks and a pair of geese). This is not a farm manager or internship job, this is a chance to run your own business, meaning you keep all the profits from what you sell, but there is no hourly/weekly compensation. That being said, the sweetest part of this deal is that you have an established customer base of three restaurants (both Rev Soups and The Whiskey Jar, which is selling through a case of collards a week!), so you can focus on growing produce and not selling/marketing it. The ideal candidate will have some farming experience, a can-do attitude, a ton of enthusiasm and the patience to endure working with this quirky, sometimes stressed out family.
